Cataract Awareness Month with our Optometrists in Okmulgee and South Tulsa
June is Cataracts Awareness Month, an effort by Prevent Blindness America to educate the public about the development, progression, and treatment of cataracts. Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness in the world and 24 million people over the age of forty gradually develop the condition. Luckily, cataracts can be easily treated with surgery and the procedure is considered very safe and effective. In the U.S. alone, more than 3 million people per year undergo cataract surgery and the outpatient operation boasts a success rate of around 95%. At The Eye Center, our Okmulgee and South Tulsa optometrists encourage all people to schedule regular eye exams because early detection of cataracts is crucial.
Cataracts Awareness Month
In the summer months, we especially feel the need to raise awareness about using proper eye protection and taking preventative measures to guard against injuries. UV exposure is a known cause of cataracts and with the sun at full effect during summer, we urge all people to remember that sunglasses aren’t just a fashion statement, but a crucial part of your eye health.
Tips on Keeping Your Eyes Healthy
Although sun exposure and cataracts may be inevitable for some people, there are ways to minimize sun damage, reduce the risk of getting cataracts, and to ensure eye health all year round:
- Get regular vision screenings
- Reduce alcohol consumption
- Avoid smoking
- Eat healthy foods
- Reduce exposure to UV rays
